This tutorial refers to an old version of Xindy. In the current
version, you have to use

% xindy -t ex1.xlg -M style1.xdy ex1.raw

I'll forward this problem to Xindy's mailinglist.

This looks strage. You call xindy, but get a error message from xindy.v2.
Did you really call xindy? What's the output of

% which xindy
% xindy --version

Xindy.v2 is obsolate and was removed from the package in version 2.4-1.
