ISTR there being a similar issue in the past and there's nothing I can do in this case. Nouveau will hopefully fix this. For your machine, using 2.6.35 and Nouveau from git, you should have some degree of success from what I've been told. But the paint is still very much wet. You'll want to use pommed 1.34 in this config to get the Nouveau backlight support. I may still need to bump the Nouveau driver to first priority (currently second, first being mbp_backlight). I'm very interested in feedback about this configuration, if you get that working at some point.
