Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

As discussed off-BTS with Alexander Wirt, I'm hereby requesting the creation of
this list. Please find below the list information; I've followed the template
available at <http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/HOWTO_start_list>, I hope you
find it convenient.

Name: debian-derivati...@lists.debian.org

Rationale:

For context, you might want to check the "derivatives" section of my last
"bits from the DPL" Message-ID: <20100520153339.ga25...@upsilon.cc>.

In short: people working on distribution based on Debian that want to
contribute back to Debian sometimes have difficulties in understanding where
to direct their efforts, who to contact, etc. The proposed list aims to be a
front-desk / mentoring list specifically targeted at those kind of
people. Several people answered to my call for help (more than a dozen ATM)
and are now ready to start serving as members of that front desk.

Note:

Once the list is created, I'll ask DSA to set up a mail alias
"derivati...@debian.org" pointing to the list (they are OK with that,
according to preliminary discussion). The rationale for that is to have an
address that can be remembered by heart. Discussing with Alexander, we
concluded that that should be not particularly problematic for SPAM filtering,
but if you have some check/scoring on the "To:" (or other recipients) then you
 might want to deactivate it.

In fact, the main reason to have a mailing list instead of a mail alias is to
easily enable people to subscribe to the list as derivative mentors.

Short description

front-desk for developers of Debian-based distributions (AKA "derivatives")

Long description

Derivatives front-desk: a mentoring list where developers of distributions
based on Debian can send questions on how to contribute back to Debian.

Examples of appropriate / frequent inquiries are: who should I contact to
form a joint packaging team? who is responsible in Debian for ...? which
procedure should I follow to contribute that improvement back to Debian? etc.

Category

I'm not sure about that, might fit "developers", but is probably not
interesting for all Debian developers, unless they care about helping
derivative distros. I'd vote for "Other", unless you've better suggestions.

Subscription Policy

Open. Ideally: I expect only "derivative mentors" to be list members, but I
don't see any reason to moderate subscription (well, we risk trolling, but I
believe we can deal with that if/when it will happen).

Post Policy

  Open.

Web Archive

  No.

After filing the request, it would be very much appreciated if several other
people interested in the new list would send a mail to the bug, in order to
record their interest.

I've already collected about a dozen people which are interested to serve as
derivative mentors, so I believe this step can be skipped. Of course I can
disclose the list of people here, if you want.

Cheers.
