Well, mysql says "MySQL is a fast, stable and true multi-user, multi-threaded SQL database server". SQL database server is a well-known term, and at the same time a good description (database server). wims just says "An educational application server". I am pretty sure that there is no standardized meaning for "educational application server" and even "application server" sounds more like what tomcat does for java programs. > -----------------8<-------------------- > Wims is a fast, stable and true multi-user, multi-threaded educational > application server. It supports the language OEF to describe exercises. > The main goals of Wims are speed, robustness and ease of use. > . > This package contains all the infrastructure needed to setup Wims > modules support. > -----------------8<-------------------- mysql-server also explains what SQL is. What's OEF? I can guess what exercises are in an educational context, but that could be expanded. > IMHO, the main problem is that your background contains a good training > about SQL databases, and no previous knowledge about Wims. That's your problem I'm afraid :). Package descriptions should be readable by anyone (with some general background). > If that topic does interest you, please take a look at > http://www.google.com/search?q=wims and eventually > http://www.wimsedu.info, and make a few propositions which would > make the description for Wims more evident for people who do not use > it. Quoting from wimsedu.info: An introduction to WIMS The WIMS educational platform offers a rich panoply of resources and exercises either with free access or for personalised study. The pedagogical resources in WIMS include: * exercises with automatic feedback and correction, which allow the learners to work at their own pace; * interactive exercices with randomly assigned data, which allow the learners to work on the same type of exercise but with different data and as often as they wish; * exercises with an automatic scoring system, which enhances learner motivation; * user-friendly graphics and calculation tools; * dexplanatory documents that are hyperlinked to the relevant exercises that function with randomly selected data. These resources are available in different subjects and at several levels for each subject. Their use does not require any specific skill, and they can easily be adapted by teachers. Virtual classes : Virtual classes provide a framework where the teacher can include selected resources in a specific study program and provide a specific study schedule for the learners. Institutional classes” allow the learner to access all of his study programs in different subject matters with a single login procedure. Several free access WIMS sites are available for teachers wanting to create a “virtual class” (all you need is an Internet connection and a web browser). What about something like: Description: WWW Interactive Mathematics Server (WIMS) The WIMS educational platform offers a rich panoply of resources and exercises either with free access or for personalised study. . * exercises with automatic feedback and correction, which allow the learners to work at their own pace; * interactive exercices with randomly assigned data, which allow the learners to work on the same type of exercise but with different data and as often as they wish; * exercises with an automatic scoring system, which enhances learner motivation; * user-friendly graphics and calculation tools; * dexplanatory documents that are hyperlinked to the relevant exercises that function with randomly selected data. .
