I just discovered that this applies not to all processes, I can see this behavior only with smbd.

Didn't notice the first time because I hadn't any processes doing io which didn't belong to root. Sorry.

Maybe this is related to the fact that instances of smbd are reused and change their user id during process lifetime? Maybe ps always shows current user but iotop only shows the initial user?
