Ah, right, well it must depend on the backends you have
built/installed. Of course, it can not default to ALSA if it is not
available! However, if you have a bunch of potentially valid backends,
it is not clear to me how it selects. I am just guessing that it does
something simple to default from one of the backends that are
available.
