OK, so I have determined that I was wrong: gnome-themes* does not solve the 
problem. I found my way to a different solution, which appears to be solid. I 
have gnome-settings-daemon as among my startup programs. That makes the gtk 
file selector dialog quite happy, and fast.

Most users of a gtk app might already have this running, and they might not 
even have the problem I and others have had. I run Enlightenment as my wm, and 
so don't load all of gnome.
