I had what appeared to be the same problem: extremely slow deployment of
the file selector dialog.

Following a tip on another site, I found that I had no gnome or gtk icon
themes installed. So, I installed the following packages:

       gnome-themes-more
       gtk2-engines-pixbuf
       gtk-chtheme
       gtk2-engines-smooth
       gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks
       gtk2-engines

That made no difference. Oh well.

Then I installed:

       gnome-themes
       gnome-themes-extras

and found gtk file selector happiness. The Open and Save commands in
different programs that use the gtk selector open rapidly.

I can't say what this implies for dependencies. But perhaps there is
something suggestive in all this.
