The one thing I did not like about Gnome 2 was a number of missing settings. They are accessible, but by the obscure gconf-editor interface. gTweakUI provides a number of them in configurable dialogs, which would be more suited to the enduser. Therefore it should be included as dependency in the gnome metapackage.
It seems a similar tool called "GNOME Plumbing" is going to be be added to the GNOME desktop in the short term (give or take) anyway:
