Just as a follow up to my previous post, I did purge the packages and I did add headers to my custom init.d scripts (not entirely sure what I was doing) so I was able to successfully convert to dependency-based boot. A reboot went fine except for an error the first time I logged into gnome (no logon server available). The next attempt went fine.
I wanted to clarify that in my previous report I meant that there were no models for what to put in /etc/insserv/overrides. Thanks.
