I have considered just dropping it before, anyway, since as you noted, ‘dh --no-act <target>’ tells everything already. The reason I didn’t is to help people not familiar with Debian to get to know a package, by removing the need to get deeply acquainted with ‘dh’. make -f <makefile> -n <target> is the standard way to learn what a target does. Well, the debian/rules 'text with spaces' thing is a neat trick, so I don’t mind it too much. I suppose it will help people stop thinking of debian/rules as a traditional makefile and get used to thinking of it as a sort of shell script with different syntax --- a good thing.
