Time is still very limited here (and will be at least until late
summer).

Would a package in experimental help here? I'd really like to see thie
properly integrated - as I see things the major blocker is to not store
local password so we don't violate any local password hashing schemes.

The libpam-auth-update patch isn't very intrusive and if the config
works for you why not use a separate package?
