I now have only testing in my sources.list, and aptitude is still uninstallable. See:- ~$ sudo apt-get install aptitude Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies. aptitude : Depends: libapt-pkg-libc6.9-6-4.8 Depends: libept0 (>= 0.5.30) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: apt-xapian-index but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages sources.list now reads:- :~$ more /etc/apt/sources.list #deb ftp://ftp.debian-multimedia.org unstable main #deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free #deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian experimental main contrib non-free deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian testing main #contrib non-free And yes, I did run "apt-get update" after editing sources.list. And there is some problem with dependency information somewhere - apt provides the libapt-pkg-libc6Whatever package; and it is installed; but still aptitude refuses to install. I do not think that being in experimental is a reason for apt/dpkg to ignore correctly declared dependency information in packages. Additionally, Package libapt-pkg-libc6.9-6-4.8 is a virtual package provided by: You should explicitly select one to install. is an unexpected / incomplete message; I think a a package SHOULD be named here when the user has given apt* wrong / inadequate names of packages to be installed. -- Mahesh T.
