I think you refer to the entry about JAVA_HOME in the README.Debian file ? You are right it is not necessary, at least not with the free vm's in debian and the current non-free JDKs packageable with java-package. I the next upload I will remove this section form the README.Debian to not confuse the users and close this bug reports.
