 I suspect this might be related to bug #540831 and the alsa maintainers
blacklisting the pcspk module. Do you get out any beep at all? With e.g.
echo -e '\a'? If you don't get out any beeps at all then beep can't help
you here, you have to get the blacklisted module loaded to get out the
beeps.
