Hi Sam,

I first ran into this in an LVM-backed schroot running Squeeze.

I then reproduced the bug in what I that was a fresh install from the
Squeeze netinstall iso running under kvm. I've since tried
reproducing this again in a definitely fresh Squeeze install in kvm:
the log directory is created and couch starts up fine. Therefore I
must have made a change to my first install that I didn't record.

It seems my bug does not exist. Sorry for not checking carefully
enough before reporting it.
