Hello Andrew - Thanks for reporting this bug. I just tried to reproduce by installing the package on a clean system and /var/log/couchdb was created correctly and couchdb started right up.
Could you provide any guidance on reproducing this bug? Ex., were you upgrading from a previous version (if so, which version)? Did you see weird output while installing couchdb?
