I've modified base-installer to configure APT to use /media/cdrom instead of /cdrom as mount mount for apt-cdrom. I've tested with a Lenny CD that this works. AFAICT with this addition all previous changes are now valid for both CD based and hd-media installs. Thanks to Colin for setting me straight.
