I've now checked this with gedit, iceweasel, gnome-terminal, pidgin,
openoffice and the gnome calculator and I'm not seeing anything like this.

I'm also a little surprised if this is even remotely common as I've not
seen any "me too" type messages. What you're seeing is quite dramatic.

To debug this problem I will need more information. 
Is Xorg.log or the kernel printing any strange messages? 
Does it happen if you just install the package or only if it is 
subsequently rebooted?
Do you have any non-default items in /etc/sysctl.conf or /etc/sysctl.d/*
Can you try to install -8 package twice to see if it is a toggle on/off
problem.
