I want to second the last error report.

With grub-pc 1.98~20100128-1
the installation of a new kernel fails because of the error message

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: unknown filesystem.

while building the /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Downgrading to grub-common and grub-pc to version 1.98~20100126-1 allowed me
to install a new kernel.

$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/hda
