Looking at the list of installed dependencies, you have libfbclient2 from the 2.5 branch (src:firebird2.5). This is OK and as intented, but 2.5 uses another approach to lock files and this may be interferring here. The tests I did were on a lenny system (with firebird2.1 rebuilt for lenny) so were using libfbclient from the 2.1 sources. I'll investigate further.
