They explain the situation quite well, and i'm satisfied with your arguments for waiting on 3.0-rc1. If your packaging work involves putting together preliminary packages for the alphas and betas, you could consider putting them in experimental (as opposed to unstable) until rc1 drops. I don't mean to create more work for you, of course -- only do that if you think (a) it would help you get the feedback you need, and (b) it doesn't waste a lot of your time on the debian packaging. I'll leave this bug open so that other folks can find the information via the debian BTS. Feel free to close it with your package of 3.0-rc1 once that happens.
