I tried again and installed all of the packages recommended by sucrose-0.86. Now it works even inside virtualbox.

PS: I'll keep this bug open as a reminder to get the dependencies of the sucre-* meta-packages right, is this OK?

As is this bugreport is not of much use, unfortunately. It would be great if you could elaborate a bit on which concrete packages you had include, and also if you could have a look at the logfiles below ~/.sugar to see if some of them reveal useful hints about which of the missing packages was fatal.
