Wht's interesting - the problem appeared only after I switched the printer from LPT port to the USB port. The bundled version worked perfectly with the HL-1430 connected to old good Centronics port.
I've survived some time using the workaround described in the original bug report with old PPD taken from http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-HL-1430 However after last upgrade (yesterday? one ore two days earlier?) of my debian/testing system, the above workaround stopped to work. I get 'stopped "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed" ' status in CUPS when I try to print something on the HL-1430 configured with the old PPD.
