Hi again, I'm sorry (or glad??) to inform you that the bug vanished. It may be closed.
Let me explain: I had some kernel oopses due to ecryptfs, but I didn't think this had anything to do with gnome-applets. Nevertheless, after deinstallation of ecryptfs and a reboot everything was back to normal. I should have rebooted before reporting the bug.
