Does it always start from xterm and sometimes-not with menu? because
if it fails sometimes also in xterm, you can try to launch it with
'-d' option (see gkrellm --help for options) and send the output.

If it always works in xterm, then there must be some problem with your
windows system, and consequently it's not a bug in gkrellm.
