I installed Debian Lenny on a virtual machine apt-get install kde iceweasel openoffice.org The email with mime application/x-ole-storage *.doc opened fine in OpenOffice Writer. I then installed openoffice.org from backports. The email with mime Word doc as application/x-ole-storage worked fine. So I'm guessing that somewhere along the upgrade from Debian Sarge=>Etch=>Lenny this mime type broke.
