Hmm. Assuming you don't install the recommends, it looks like libdbus-1-3 only adds a 320k dependency, which is quite small compared to the size of emacs itself, and I can imagine that zeroconf services (for example) might be useful, even on servers. So at the moment, I'm somewhat inclined to keep the dbus support.
