You told that it works with gsynaptics installed back. In this case
gsynaptics-init is automatically started on beginning of GNOME session
and it restores settings stored in gsynaptics. Settings are stored in
gconf - /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/. So as soon as you install
it, it settings should be applied.
