Shouldn't a kernel module issue be solved by unloading and reloading
the module?

Will do. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to happen every time, and I
do not use this particular notebook on a daily basis (it's my wife's
notebook, and she has her own Debian installation using lenny and
network-manager). I will report back one I have debugging output.
