I can't reproduce your makedev problem here at all. For example:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp/makedevtest$ sudo /dev/MAKEDEV -v irda

create ircomm1 c 161 1 root:dialout 0660
create irlpt1 c 161 17 root:lp 0660

What is different/special about your system that might affect this. Did
MAKEDEV not have write access to the current directory when you ran it?
That should generate error messages if true, though
