I'm also experiencing something like this. When GDM pops up, the keyboard stops responding as soon as I type anything. I'm able to do Ctrl+Alt+Fn and work normally on the console *before* I input anything into GDM, however after the input Ctrl+Alt+Fn no longer works. The same kind of lockup happens when I pop up the Actions menu using the mouse. In both cases, the mouse can be moved, but clicks are ignored. A hard reset is then required (I couldn't chek logging in by SSH, but the poweroff button is also ignored). Running the X session with startx gives no problems. This may be related with #533724, since installing the packages mentioned there (xserver-xorg-input-kbd and xserver-xorg-input-mouse) allowed me to type in my login and part of my password before locking.
