It's just vanilla ext3, all on a local filesystem, no NFS or anything
else like that.

I'll give that a spin shortly and see what happens.

I don't recall seeing this with 1.1.16, and have nothing about it in
earlier logs.  It started after the 1.2 upload to Debian yesterday.
