Ok, I think I've figured out roughly how to reproduce this now ... The trouble would seem to occur if I have multiple MUA instances accessing the same IMAP folder, a new message comes in to it, then one of them views it. At that point something gets out of sync and a message like the above is logged. If it makes any difference, the MUA is mutt. Both instances are only accessing mail in that folder via dovecot.
