The prelease texlive-latex-extra deb worked fine operationally (that is I found no errors running the latex command). But the package system clashes (the problems that I was ignoring with --force-overwrite --force-depends) were getting annoying, making it difficult to keep routine package upgrades smooth (I'd only upgraded the 2009 texlive-latex-extra package, not the whole 2009 texlive system). So I let texlive-latex-extra downgrade back to the normal current (2007) version and am handling the new achemso via the $HOME/texmf mechanism.
