libsasl2-2 does contain the EXTERNAL mech, and the sasldb auxprop plugin
(I believe).
The following common packages contain dependencies on libsasl2 but
function just fine without having any additional authentication mechs:
postfix
libldap2/ldap-utils/slapd
mutt
subversion
asterisk
Adding additional dependencies will only add cruft to many of these
users during their next upgrade.
