The text width in the templates file is not really important as it has nothing to do with how things will be really displayed (with the noticeable exception of text that's hard-formatted on purpose....which is done when lines are prepended with *two* spaces...which does not happen in ufw). So, changing the text width has no consequence on translations and you may adapt things as you want in the final result. One thing you should be careful about, though: track down *trailing spaces* in lines. These will produce double spaces when the material is displayed by debconf, and these double spaces will also appear in material offered to translators. So, in short: *no trailing spaces*.
