Fine, but I'll still have to set this manually and it doesn't work "out of the box".

What I'd like to see is the GDFONTPATH variable set to a reasonable default by gnuplot. It could point towards a directory which contains a font recommended by the gnuplot package (e.g. ttf-liberation). The default font would also have to be changed from "arial" to something reasonable then.

Thanks, but IMHO users shouldn't need to change the defaults in order to achieve the expected results.
