I just had a go at building nvidia-kernel 180.44-1. I couldn't get what I did in message #30 to work this time (maybe I merged in the wrong order this time, those packages tend to conflict with each other a bit), but in the end m-a did work.
m-a failed at first because there was no debian/control file in /usr/src/modules/nvidia-kernel so I ran "make -f debian/rules configure" on it and after that m-a worked.
