Hmmm... I think I see what could be the problem. Do you have the opportunity to install another jvm, such as sun-java6-jre or cacao-oj6-jre ? Then run either: JAVA_FLAVOR=cacaooj6 freecol or JAVA_FLAVOR=sun6 freecol Does the problem still show up ? If not, this probably has got something to do with the rasterizing of fonts in your version of openjdk (catastrophic, IMHO). Please upgrade to the one currently in unstable, it seems to have improved.
