But /var/log/news has 644.  Not particularly useful for a directory.
And straight crazy for a default (which apparently it is in rsyslog).
The actual log files in it are fine, though.  To make it absolutely
clear: /var/log/news is created by rsyslog, because there are log
files in it.  So I consider parent directory creation in rsyslog
broken: either it should not happen automatically, or the created
directories should be root:root 755 (unless configured otherwise).

I agree, but not sure if Inn is the only news server in Debian.
