And, what's the problem with that? /var/log also has root:root 755 permissions. If inn(2) needs special permissions for /var/log/news, it should chown/chmod so in its postinst imho. I, as maintainer of rsyslog, don't know, what inn needs. Thinking about it, I think the log rules for inn(2) should be removed from the default rsyslog.conf anyways (probably post lenny) and inn should provide a approriate /etc/rsyslog.d/ snippet.
