This problem is because of the way checkinstall works. Checkinstall tracks the 
isntallation, and after that creates a package with the contents that are 
already on the system. Thus, if the dpkg run fails, the system is 
inconsistent: apt thinks it has an older version than what is actually 
installed.

Filesystem translation helps avoid this problem, but it is currently broken 
due to a set of new system calls that checkinstall doesn't track yet.
