I tried to spell-check a document with the word "choeur", with the oe as a ligature, in Emacs, and it was made obvious that the "oe" ligature was not considered to be a word character. In fact, there are no "oe" ligatures in the word lists, but it turns out that if you add the ligature as a character to the dictionaries-common declarations, then aspell does the right thing, and treats the ligature as if it were the two letters "o" followed by "e". In order to do this, I had to switch the declared encoding of the word lists to ISO-8859-15, but this is fine, as the characters actually used in the list are in both ISO-8859-1 and ISO-8859-15.
