I wonder what's the problem with your archive. I'm generating ASCII archives here and they don't show the problem. I've tried with archives with several subfolders and files under them, and I can open the archive in file-roller and view the content of the files. I've also tried with archives with hidden folders on them. Do you have a (simple) way to make an archive which has the issue?
