Can you attach an affected archive? I don't seem to be able to reproduce this:
$ ls AUTHORS > foo
$ cpio -o < foo > bar
$ gnome-open bar
(file-roller opens, I open AUTHORS and gedit displays it)
$ gzip -1 bar
$ gnome-open bar.gz
(file-roller opens, I can open bar in another file-roller instance, then open
AUTHORS in gedit)
