Thanks for the patches and apologies for the lack of response. The negative number thing was fixed for Perl 5.10.0 with upstream change 25388, see http://rt.perl.org/rt3/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=37142 . I just forwarded the C++ comment fix to the perl5-porters list for upstream inclusion.
