This default is set by the package 'libgnome2-common', but please go
through its bugs before filing a new one (or reassigning this one),
because this seems like a problem that might have popped up before and
might have already been answered.
One could argue that libgnome2-common should either recommend it or not
set it as default, but then again, they (the maintainers) might have a
good reason for it that I fail to see.

Try:
gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec -t string
sensible-browser

Then give Transmission another shot.
