I forget what the problem was so I can't really test it. I now use mrxvt not rxvt. I no longer have pixmap installed. Note that in Etch, all that depends on xbitmaps is xlibs-data (not libx11-data) and xterm. I don't have xterm installed. libx11-data does not depend on xbitmaps.
