I've been thinking about this (sorry for the long delay in responding), and the only way this can happen is if the xbitmaps package isn't installed. Now xbitmaps is an indirect dependency of pixmap (pixmap -> libx11-6 -> libx11-data -> xbitmaps), so it should be installed... It could be that the version in etch doesn't have the correct dependency (the version in testing / lenny does). So, could you check that if you install xbitmaps, the problem is solved?
